Innovative Software enables certification for small holder cooperatives
There are more than 500 million smallholders and small-scale agricultural businesses in the world. Many of them are facing considerable problems when they wish to obtain a certification, e.g. organic, Fairtradeor GLOBALG.A.P. because this tends to be very expensive and time-consuming. On the other hand, it is often difficult to gain access to international markets without a certification. Group certifications can help to overcome such difficulties.
Group certification processes are based on a compulsory internal inspection process in the producer group. Within these groups, implementation, organization, administration and documentation can be very demanding, which is why many producer groups fail to meet the requirements in the certification process.
This is where the Group Integrity software comes into play. The web-based software helps smallholder organizations and companies working with contracted farmers carry out their administrative tasks and organize their internal inspection systems in a simple and safe way.
By professionalizing organization, administration and documentation, this software tool reduces costs, facilitates external certification and strengthens the company’s credibility on national and international markets. By using “multi-standard inspection checklists” smallholder groups can document and organize the implementation of the requirements for all different standards likeorganic, Fairtrade, UTZ Certified and GLOBALG.A.P. This way, internal inspection and documentation as well as preparation and cooperation with the inspection body responsible for external inspection and certification become much easier. Other advantages are safety and continuity. Time-consuming training efforts for new employees can be reduced since all data and processes are well documented within the system and the “institutional knowledge” of the group is preserved independently of the persons who share it.
Highlights of the software
- The Group Integrity software is based on Ecert but was simplified to offer producer groups an inexpensive tool tailored to their specific needs.
- The software is web-based, which means it can be used online around the globe without being installed on a local workstation.
- The software supports different languages and offers multi-standard checklists showing the control points / indicators of the relevant standards applied (e.g. organic, Fairtrade, UTZ Certified and GLOBALG.A.P.). Additional standards can be added at any time.
