Biofach 2018 in Retrospective
So much to see and so little time! BIOFACH 2018 once again offered its visitors a first-class experience with all the important players in the organic sector being represented at the Nuremberg fair. Intact was also present again—this time even with a lecture about "Blockchain".
Bigger, Better, Organic
Quinoa shakes, goji flakes, and organic fast food are served. Chocolates, chips, and avocados carry the FAIRTRADE seal of approval, and olive oils from all over the world shine "greener" than ever before. Organic is on the rise and nowhere is this more evident than at BIOFACH in Nuremberg. This year, the world's leading trade fair for organic food products once again offered everything the professional audience could wish for. It provided a good overview of this still extremely fast-growing sector. In Austria alone, the cultivation area for organic food crops grows by 300 football pitches per day (!!!). With an organic land share of 24 percent, the Alpine Republic is the leading organic country in the EU and ranks fourth compared worldwide. And this still is far from the end: by 2025, the organic share is even set to rise up to around 30 percent. A global trend that has increased sales in the organic sector to almost 90 billion US-Dollars per year. This is remarkable, especially when considering that sales in 2000 were only at 17.9 billion.
More than 3,000 exhibitors from 93 countries took part in BIOFACH this year to present their organic products and make new business contacts. More than 50,000 visitors explored the nine exhibition halls of the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre, where thorough planning is a must But even so it is almost impossible to see everything the fair has to offer in only four days. Believe us—we have tried!
BIOFACH Congress—Knowledge Transfer
Parallel to the trade fair events, BIOFACH also offers the opportunity to take part in the "BIOFACH Congress" with interesting lectures on a large range of topics. This is the perfect opportunity to get the latest information directly from the industry experts. The topics covered included ideas of the new organic-generation moving forward, technological advances, and political questions regarding organic. Intact was also invited to give a lecture this year. Our colleague René Schöffmann talked about "Blockchain and Its Application in the Food Industry" and covered not only opportunities but also significant obstacles this new technology poses to the food industry, which was extremely well received by the audience in the crowded congress hall.
In the past, Intact has already demonstrated a good feeling for new technologies and opportunities. Nothing proves this better than our revolutionary software Ecert, which has significantly changed how many of us perceive and work in the food industry.
As with the exhibition space, good planning was also required at the congress. An agenda fully packed with more than 115 lectures and discussions put the congress participants at the crossroads of choice. Many sessions ran in parallel which rendered it impossible to see all of them. The sessions we saw were first-class and packed with internationally renowned experts.
