Das NON-GMO Project in den USA setzt auf eine Zertifikatsdatenbank von Intact

The success story... of the Non-GMO Project

Unlike in Europe, people in the US are confronted with genetically modified food in their everyday lives. In the US, there is no legal obligation for manufacturers to label genetically modified food. Without this regulation in place, consumers needed a reliable method for identifying which products contained or avoided GMOs, and many shoppers looked to their local natural and independent grocery stores for answers. The Non-GMO Project Verified program was established to improve the information available to US customers.

“Ecert helped optimize our data management so that our systems scaled well with our organization’s rapid growth. As we continue to streamline our processes, we have been grateful to have Intact’s guidance and technical expertise,” Caroline Kinsman from Non-GMO Project.

The success story of Non-GMO Project

The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization that offers the only independent non-GMO verification program in all of North America. The Project started as an initiative led by independent food retailers that shared a common goal of creating a standardized meaning of non-GMO for the North American food industry. The Non-GMO Project is committed to preserving and building the non-GMO food supply, educating consumers, and providing verified non-GMO choices. The driving belief behind the Project is that everyone deserves an informed choice about whether or not to consumer genetically modified organisms.

The Non-GMO Project verified its first products in 2010, and from there, the product enrollments skyrocketed. In spring 2013, the world’s leading natural and organic grocer Whole Foods Market® announced its plans to further in-store transparency by labeling whether products contained GMOs, meaning the products in their stores would require the Non-GMO Project Verified seal or organic label or be labeled as containing GMOs. At present, approximately 1,000 new products per month are gaining Non-GMO Project Verification status. Congratulations on this great success!

What does the Non-GMO Project Verified seal mean?

The Non-GMO Project Verified seal guarantees that the product carrying the mark has been produced according to consensus-based best practices for GMO avoidance. The verification process is conducted by an independent party (“third party verification”) that determines whether a product complies with the Non-GMO Project Standard or not. Since transparency and clarity are the Non-GMO Project’s top priority, you can find detailed information about both the verification process and the Non-GMO Project Standard on their website.

In the US, the Non-GMO Project Verified seal is THE seal when it comes to non-GMO foods. Due to the enormous interest in the Project, the organization’s leadership team soon realized that they needed IT support to handle all inquiries. The goal was to find a professional software tool to enhance the efficiency of the verification process with a single data input and a quick and easy data exchange with the contracted inspection and certification entities. Besides the internal implementation of a professional IT solution, the Non-GMO Project also provides a public online product search that allows shoppers to search for Verified products. The Non-GMO Project also offers a free mobile app, which supports consumers in knowing what’s in their food and avoiding GMOs. iPhone app currently available with a new release scheduled to launch summer 2014, which will include an Android version.

We are very proud that the Non-GMO Project chose Ecert as their preferred product and thus Intact as their partner.
